UPDATES...sort of.

So we found out that we are going to be having a second child. :)

Great news for us, not so great news for this project. Hectic times are ahead, but i will post here again once work has commenced.

Hope all is well! Have a happy new year!

Fiddle-dee-dee

I began fiddling with the new mic and the Mac's Garageband settings this past weekend. Garageband has all sorts of preset effects you can use when recording...hundreds in fact. It looks like over 20 just for different vocal types and settings. I'm new to Macintosh, and so this might take some getting used to, but it shouldn't be too hard after I get into the swing of things.

Nothing has been recorded as of yet really. Not until I'm happy with how the set up is recording my voice.

Not much else to report I'm afraid. Until next time!!

Put in the order...

Sent in the order for the mic and it's components. Decided against "building" a pop filter and found a nice one for pretty cheap. All should be arriving within the week.

Once all is set up and working as it should I will start recording the initial first chapter and see how things go from there. I wonder how many minutes listening time the first chapter will end up being?

I wonder how many CDs these 279 pages will need once CD duplication comes into the picture. Ah, but I'm so far from that stage! One step at a time, mister, one step at a time!! :)

Article

I found a great article online regarding the Art and Science of Audio Book Production.

http://www.loc.gov/nls/other/audioart/allinone.html

It is very informative with many wonderful tips for this project.

Grant Status - story so far...

With some help from Sean and some more from the internet I've come to believe that not one grant will be available for this project. Not that I've found at this point anyway. Most grants available for the arts have strict requirements for the applicant as well as the types of art eligible for review. This applicant and this project don't seem to meet any of them.

First Entry

Around July 21st 2006 I got the idea in my head to go ahead and begin a new project. A long intensive one, but one that should yeild a wonderful end product. Starting today I will try and document the progress of this project on this here blog.

I decided that Sean Carswell's novel, Drinks For The Little Guy, was in need of a new medium. And what better medium than my favorite kind: Book on CD! So I picked up the novel again and finished it in three or four days and notated words I might have trouble pronouncing to research later.

I then began microphone shopping. I'm pretty set on getting this USB compatible Samson Tech:

I also need to decide whether or not I want to make or purchase a Pop Guard for the mic to reduce popping noises when reading words with P or T sounds.

Now, the entire time I was reading the novel again and planning all of these things I had decided that I would send the finished copy to Sean and see what he thought. Once I was done reading the book however, I deemed it a horrible Idea. I would need his blessing if nothing at all, and if it was my literary work I'd sure as hell like to know about a project of this magnitude.

So I threw the "Let me surprise Sean with my project," idea out the window and called him yesterday. He was so jazzed that it got me even more excited! He told me that at this time the book is once again out of print as Gorsky Press focuses on new projects until funds are once again available for a reprinting. Maybe this will be a way to spark people's interest in the book again and warrant a reprint!

I was also thinking of applying for some grants for the project, but can't seem to find one that would be willing to offer this type of art free money. The search will continue however...and if anyone reading this has an idea on where to apply, or how to apply, or can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it!

That is all for now! Until the next update!
